UK, October 27, 2008 - "Oblivion with guns" has been the standard put-down of Fallout 3 since its announcement. The infamously passionate fans of Interplay's old, turn-based PC post-apocalyptic role-playing games didn't trust Bethesda with the license, while the sizeable Oblivion backlash community were determined to disparage anything they did next. Poor Fallout 3 has been dogged by Angry Internet Men every step of the way. So, "Oblivion with guns", they sneered, as though that was the insult to end all insults, like it meant "stupid, but now with more stupid". Now it's arrived at last and yes, turns out it is Oblivion with guns. The thing is, that's not an insult – it's very much a compliment. It's a grand, gigantic role-playing world that's infinitely more ambitious than the swords and spells of its forerunner.
